Wolfgang Schumann (composer)
Music director Wolfgang Schumann (born April 23, 1927 in Mönchengladbach , † 2012 in Schöneiche near Berlin ) was a German conductor and composer .
Life
Schumann grew up in the Rhineland . When shortly before the end of the war in 1945 he was to be called in to serve as an anti-aircraft helper , he hid in Lobenstein with the help of his father and a pastor , thus avoiding military service.
After the war, Wolfgang Schumann studied conducting and composition at the Cologne University of Music , a. a. at Günter Wand . He then worked as a guest conductor (e.g. with the Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra ) and as Kapellmeister at several theaters, most recently he led the Neubrandenburg Philharmonic .
Since 1958 Wolfgang Schumann lived in Schöneiche near Berlin and worked there as a freelance composer after he was no longer able to practice his conducting profession due to an accident. His wife Annemarie Schumann, with whom he had been married since 1986, was a Protestant pastor there ; he regularly accompanied their services with music on the piano or organ .
As a composer , Schumann turned mainly to concert music, especially for television and radio . Especially in his later years he also wrote many titles for regional ensembles , such as the youth orchestra in Frankfurt (Oder) and Zielona Góra , the 1st Brandenburg Guard Brass Band Corps Fürstenwalde and for various flute ensembles of his wife.
He was buried in the Schöneich forest cemetery.
