Wolfgang Steiner

Wolfgang Steiner (born March 2, 1942 in Crailsheim ) is a German doctor for ear, nose and throat medicine , head and neck surgery and professor emeritus at the University of Göttingen .

Live and act

Wolfgang Steiner graduated from the Erlangen-Nuremberg Medical School in 1969 . From 1971 to 1986 he worked at the ENT University Clinic in Erlangen (Director Malte Eric Wigand). In 1975 he completed his ENT specialist training. In 1979 he completed his habilitation and in 1985 became associate professor in Erlangen.

From 1986 to 2007 he was Professor and Director of the University ENT Clinic in Göttingen .

Steiner Chairman of the ENT Society was North West Germany (1987-1988), President of the German Society of Otorhinolaryngology , Head - and neck - surgery (1997-1998), Chairman of the oncological working group of the German ENT Society (1992 –1996) and President of the German Society for Endoscopy and Imaging (2000). In 2013 he was honorary president of the annual conference of the German Society for Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery in Nuremberg and in 2015 he was guest of honor at the 2nd World Congress on Larynx Cancer in Australia.

Steiner worked internationally as a surgeon and lecturer in laser - microsurgery and led more than 100 surgical courses at home and abroad by, making his therapeutic concept has received international recognition. Wolfgang Steiner has been married since 1966 and the couple has three sons.

Scientific focus

Steiner's scientific focus is on laryngology , endoscopy and laser surgery . He did pioneering work in particular in the area of ​​transoral laser microsurgery for organ preservation in cancer of the upper aerodigestion tract . The focus is also on the areas of endoscopic cancer prevention and early detection of tumors of the upper respiratory tract and food tract, endoscopic field studies for cancer prevention (carried out for the first time worldwide) as well as the development, application and evaluation of various diagnostic methods in risk groups and cancer patients.

Steiner carried out organ and function-preserving therapies for malignant tumors (focus on the throat and larynx) with the use of transoral laser microsurgery and selective neck dissection (since 1979) as well as individualized and gentle post- irradiation together with radiation therapists from Erlangen and Göttingen.

Steiner is an honorary member of the German, Austrian, Hungarian, Polish, South African and Spanish ENT societies, the Foundation for Head and Neck Oncology of India , the South African Society of Head and Neck Oncology and the Royal College of Surgeons of England and a founding member of the Society for Minimally Invasive Therapy (London) and the Spanish-German Society for ENT, Head and Neck Surgery.
