Wolfgang Walter (mathematician)

Wolfgang Walter (born May 2, 1927 in Schwäbisch Gmünd ; † June 26, 2010 in Karlsruhe ) was a German mathematician .

Live and act

Wolfgang Walter studied in Tübingen with the degree of Dr. rer. nat. He then came to the University of Karlsruhe , where he completed his habilitation and from 1963 was a full professor at the Faculty of Mathematics. From 1975 to 1977 he was her dean. His field of work was analysis with a focus on differential equations and inequalities. He was a visiting professor at several other universities, including the USA and Canada . In 1995 he retired .

From 1986 he was President and from 1986 to 1992 Vice President of the Society for Applied Mathematics and Mechanics (GAMM).

He died after a serious illness in June 2010 at the age of 83 and was buried in the main cemetery in Karlsruhe .

Walter was married and had two daughters and a son Wolfgang V. Walter, who works as a numerics professor at the Technical University of Dresden .
