Wolfgang Windbrechtinger

Wolfgang Windbrechtinger (born August 9, 1922 in Ramingstein (Salzburg); † September 12, 2011 in Vienna ) was an Austrian architect .

Life

Wolfgang Windbrechtinger studied at the Technical University in Graz . Between 1956 and 1994 he was, together with his wife Traude Windbrechtinger, a freelance architect in Vienna. In 1963 he was awarded the Austrian State Prize for Architecture for the “Volksheuriger Bellevue” .

In 1965 Windbrechtinger was a founding member of the Austrian Society for Architecture and from 1965 to 1968 a board member of the Chamber of Engineers for Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland . In the course of the construction work for the first line of the Vienna subway ( U1 ), he was responsible for the uncovering of the Virgil Chapel , which was rediscovered in 1973, and the design of the underground showroom. In 1974, together with Wilhelm Holzbauer , he planned the conversion of Kärntner Strasse in the center of Vienna between the State Opera and Stephansplatz into a pedestrian zone .
