Wolfgang von Wangenheim

Wolfgang von Wangenheim (* 1938 in Teltow ) is a German German philologist and art historian . He is considered an authority on Johann Joachim Winckelmann .

life and work

Wolfgang von Wangenheim grew up in Kassel . After studying German in Göttingen , he taught at the universities of Paris , Abidjan and Dakar .

In 2002 von Wangenheim received the Winckelmann Medal from the city of Stendal .

“In just under twenty years, a significant collection of oil paintings, watercolors, graphics and sculptures of classicism on ancient subjects was created. Dr. Wolfgang von Wangenheim had collected the works of art over the years with a view to a future presentation in the small Saxon castle Nöthnitz . Here, where Winckelmann lived and worked for five years, a “Studienststätte Schloss Nöthnitz eV in memory of Johann Joachim Winckelmann and Imperial Count Heinrich von Bünau ” was founded in 1991 . These works of art were intended to furnish the gradually restored exhibition rooms of the palace, which were soon to be open to the public; each room addressed selected aspects of the reception of antiquity. ... Unfortunately, this success story soon came to an abrupt end. In 2009 the castle was sold and the new owner closed the rooms to the public. A Winckelmann memorial that had just been built was about to be shut down. Wolfgang von Wangenheim's collection was saved from being taken over by the new owner and can now be seen again for the first time in a temporary exhibition in the Winckelmann Museum in Stendal. The exhibition comprises the essential part of the important Nöthnitz collection ... "
