Tungsten heavy metal
As tungsten -Schwermetall (WSM) are powder-metallurgically tungsten produced alloys referred to. The alloying elements nickel - iron or, for non-magnetic applications, nickel- copper serve as the matrix for the tungsten particles .
Overview
Tungsten heavy metals are defined in the material standard ASTM B777-07. They are divided into 4 classes (Class 1-4) according to their tungsten content between 90 and 97 percent by mass. The density is between 16.85 g / cm³ and 18.85 g / cm³. Tungsten heavy metals are characterized by their good machinability , good temperature resistance, high strength and high density. Tungsten heavy metals are not used as construction material due to their poor weldability , despite their good mechanical properties (tensile strength between 700 and 1400 Mpa).
use
Tungsten heavy metals are used according to their properties.
High density:
- Ballistic projectiles (military, darts, archery)
- Weights in sports (Formula 1, sailing, fishing,)
- Balance weights ( crankshafts , turbines , rotors )
- Anti-vibration boring bars
- Tool holder
- Vibration imbalances (cell phone, electric toothbrush)
- Rotors for winding automatic movements
Radiation absorption:
- Shielding from gamma and x-rays
- As collimators
Temperature resistance:
- Mold inserts and ejectors in die-cast aluminum / magnesium .
- Electrical discharge machining
