Wolfram Reiss

Wolfram Reiss (born June 28, 1959 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein ) is a German Protestant pastor and religious scholar and has been teaching at the University of Vienna's Protestant Theological Faculty since 2007 .

Life

Reiss grew up in Frankenthal in the Palatinate . From 1978 to 1986 he studied Protestant theology and Semitic / Islamic Studies in Kiel , Berlin and Heidelberg as well as Jewish Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem from 1981 to 1983.

After the vicariate in Darmstadt and a field research stay in Cairo (1988–1989) he worked as a pastor in the Elisabethenstift Darmstadt. From 1990 to 1996 he headed the preparatory college for Orthodox scholarship holders of the EKD in Erlangen . He received his doctorate in 1996 with a thesis on the renewal in the Coptic Orthodox Church and was then pastor of the Protestant Johannesgemeinde and teacher at the Ludwig-Erk-Schule in Langen (Hesse) until 2001 .

From 2001 to 2005 he worked on a joint research project between the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and the University of Rostock and wrote a habilitation thesis on the subject of depicting Christianity in Egyptian textbooks . From 2005 to 2007 he was a private lecturer in religious studies at the University of Rostock. At the same time he worked as an evangelical prison chaplain at the Diez correctional facility . Since 2007 he has been Univ.-Prof. for religious studies at the Protestant Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna .

His research and teaching focuses on the three monotheistic religions of the Middle East : Islam , oriental Christianity and Judaism . In terms of philosophy of science, he advocates application-oriented religious studies as a complementary subject alongside historical and systematic comparative religious studies.
