Woods of Ypres was a Canadian metal band. The style of the band is mostly assigned to Black Metal or Doom Metal . Front man David Gold (born 1980, died December 21, 2011) was the only permanent member of the band and had a major impact on the Canadian metal scene. One of the remaining band members, Joel Violette, said that they wanted to pursue the projects planned with gold.

The band released four studio albums. Woods of Ypres' musical style has often been compared to that of Type O Negative or Agalloch .

Band history

Woods of Ypres was founded in May 2002 by David Gold and Aaron Palmer in Windsor, Ontario . In the same year the band released the demo recording Woods I: Against the Seasons: Cold Winter Songs from the Dead Summer Heat .

In 2003, Aaron Palmer left the band to study and Gold moved to Toronto to work on the first album. In 2004 the studio album Woods II: Pursuit of the Sun & Allure of the Earth was released on David Gold's label "Krankenhaus Records". From the line-up of the demo, only Gold was left in the band, who took over the vocals as well as played the drums.

In 2007 the album Woods III: Deepest Roots & Darkest Blues was released , also on "Krankenhaus Records".

In 2008 Gold and Palmer, the founders of Woods of Ypres, founded The Northern Ontario Black Metal Preservation Society. According to Gold, The Northern Ontario Black Metal Preservation Society is a black metal band, but Palmer would categorize them as a melodic black metal band. The music was influenced by Old Man's Child , Devin Townsend and the early Woods of Ypres , among others . In contrast to Woods of Ypres, Gold and Palmer carried corpsepaint in "The Northern Ontario Black Metal Preservation Society" . The band only released the EP Future Northern Prosperity .

In 2009 Woods of Ypres released the album Woods IV: The Green Album on the label "Practical Art" - originally the release was not planned before 2010. In May 2009, the band went on tour on the eastern coast of Canada, after which the bassist left the band - two weeks before the start of recording. Drummer Evan Madden's brother Shane Madden replaced him. The recording and mixing were completed in four weeks. Compared to previous albums, it was the first to be recorded from Monday to Friday. With the previous albums, the recordings took place on the weekends because the band members had to work during the week. The focus on working on the album was a welcome relief for the band.

In October 2010, David Gold denied rumors that the band had split up. At the same time he stated that his career as an independent band was over and that a professional career began with the collaboration with the Earache Records label . In 2010 Woods IV: The Green Album was re-released on Earache Records.

David Gold was killed in a car accident in Barrie on December 21, 2011 . In response, Joel Violette, the last remaining band member, announced via the Earache Records label that he wanted to pursue and publish the projects planned with Gold. A European tour was also planned to promote the new album Woods V: Gray Skies & Electric Light , which was released in February 2012. The album won the Juno Award in 2013 in the Metal / Hard Music Album of the Year category.

In May 2013 the independently released tribute album Heart of Gold: A Tribute to Woods of Ypres , produced by Dan Swanö , was released , on which 19 different bands such as November's Doom and Anemic cover songs by Woods of Ypres. One of the songs was contributed by former Woods of Ypres members Rae and Joel.

Band name

The name "Woods of Ypres" comes from a song by the band Fact of Death. According to David Gold, the name has several meanings: On the one hand, it stands for Ypres Rd. , A street in Ontario. The word “Woods” (English for “forests”) is supposed to symbolize black metal themes like “spending time in the woods”, “being inspired by nature” or “spending time alone”, which is followed by many black metal themes would be based. The name "Ypres" would stand for the band's Canadian nationality, referring to Canada's significant intervention in the Battle of Ypres in World War I.

Description of David Gold

In 2005 David Gold described Woods of Ypres' music as Black & Doom Metal, both and not entirely one or the other. He also testified that the music could be a mix of Amorphis , Anathema , Borknagar , Crowbar, and Type O Negative , both lyrically and musically, although they wouldn't sound like just one of the bands.

In 2011 Gold said the demo was raw Black Metal. At Woods II , the band experimented with warmer sounds. Woods III, on the other hand, would be black and threatening, grim and heavy ("black and doom, grim and heavy"). Gold described the first three works as "Black Metal Trilogy" because they would be based heavily on Black Metal ideas. Woods IV, on the other hand, is far removed from the previous works, the album starts with clear Doom Metal and goes over to rock , heavy ballads , progressive sludge and (“[…] an album which starts in pure doom and then flexes muscle in rock, among others) , heavy balladry, sludge prog and other ").

reception

The demo was already praised by critics all over the world, especially because the band did not have a record deal and therefore produced the demo independently of a label.

Mark McKenna of The Metal Observer called the demo unique, describing it as sultry and more summer-related Black Metal than frosty and cold Black Metal. Even Woods II: Pursuit of the Sun & Allure of the Earth is rather mild, in part similar to the style of Agalloch . The album lives from the great, warm melodies that are juxtaposed with threatening, heavy riffs . Both the clear and the guttural singing of Gold convinced. The album is also a successful, fluid oeuvre and not a series of songs. McKenna awarded nine out of ten points for the album.

Jan Wischkowski wrote in a review on “metal.de” about the album Woods III: Deepest Roots And Darkest Blues , the melodies were flattering and praised the underlining, discreet use of the keyboard. Melodic and raw Black Metal mix in the album. The clear singing predominates, but it is also faulty in places. The playing time of 72 minutes is "decent" and Wischkowski awards eight out of ten points.

Jordan Campbell from "Metal Review" refers in the album Woods IV: The Green Album to the pure baritone Golds at the beginning, which is underlined by oboe sounds, which soon turns into disaster and gloom ("[...] and the doom n ' gloom begins. "). In this piece he draws a comparison to Type O Negative . He countered allegations of other reviewers who called the texts depressed that the texts were honest. He describes the middle part of the album as wooden, cloudy, croaking and rather boring ("[...] and the whole affair becomes rather grating."). Campbell describes the last six tracks on the album as brilliant. The album would rise to a cleansing, exhausting climax. Campbell awards 8.2 out of 10 points.
