action

Poland, spring 1981: The 18-year-old Janek lives on the Polish coast, who has founded a punk rock band with his school friends and is waiting for the big breakthrough. His bumpy entry into the inexperienced music business is accompanied by his turbulent love affair with his school friend Basia and the political changes that Poland was experiencing at the time. The country is in turmoil as Solidarność sparked political conflicts, strikes and the country's state of war. Despite the political and demanding lyrics of Janek's punk rock band, his father, an officer in the military, helps him organize smaller public appearances. The film reaches a temporary high point when Basia is forced to cut off contact with the musician because her parents forbid dealing with a government sympathizer. In addition, unfortunate circumstances mean that the music of the young artists is banned due to political censorship. Defeated by current political events, the robbery of individuality and artistic expression, Janek and his bandmates rebel against the system by playing their illegal music despite the ban. They arouse sympathy, criticism and unity among the young people who long for a new and free Poland and who place their hope in Solidarność. Janek and Basia finally meet again, but the couple have to face a separation when Janek learns that Basia is going to Germany with her family because they no longer see a future in the political system of Poland.

subjects

  • Solidarność : With its portrayal, the film criticizes the political movement of the 1980s in Poland and depicts the related difficulties of the political system in Poland.
  • Music: Music, and especially the punk rock genre, is seen in film as a symbol of censorship and general prohibition. The youngsters in the film see themselves forced to keep their music secret in order to avoid political criticism.
  • Polish youth: With a strong focus on the portrayal of young people, Borcuch succeeds in demonstrating a realistic image of a troubled society.

Reviews

All that I love received mostly positive reviews. The magazine Polityka praised the simple and yet emotional look that the director grants and thus makes the film attractive not only for older age groups due to its historical references. The film arouses a welcome nostalgia in the portrayal of the growing up of the adolescent Janek. The Hollywood Reporter writes that although the film draws on elements typical of punk-rock films, the portrayal of the leading actors is generally convincing. Variety criticizes some “stereotypical moments”, but emphasizes that the film largely avoids clichés despite countless predecessors of the same genre.
