Wuert Engelmann (born February 11, 1908 in Miller , South Dakota ; † January 8, 1979 in Green Bay , Wisconsin ), alternative names: Weert Engelman (n) or Weert Engleman (n), nickname : "The Flying Dutchman of Miller" was an American American football player and athlete . He played in the National Football League (NFL) with the Green Bay Packers .

Player career

College career

Wuert Engelmann studied from 1927 to 1929 at South Dakota State University , where he played basketball as well as American football and was active as a track and field athlete. His college recognized him for all three years of study for his performance as a football player. He was elected to the league selection in both basketball and American football. In 1928, as a decathlete, he narrowly failed to qualify for the 1928 Summer Olympics in Amsterdam .

Professional career

Wuert Engelmann was hired by the Green Bay Packers in 1930, who were trained by Curly Lambeau . The Packers were the reigning NFL champions and Engelmann played alongside John McNally as the back on the team's offense . In his rookie year , Engelmann won the NFL championship with the Packers . The Packers were able to defend their championship title in the following year. In 1932 Engelmann was one of six players in the NFL who managed a touchdown after an intercepted pass . Engelmann ended his career after the 1933 season.

Honors

Wuert Engelmann is a member of the South Dakota Sports Hall of Fame . The Sports Illustrated magazine included him in the list of the 50 best athletes from South Dakota.
