Miracle of Hanover
In the mid-1950s, the rapid reconstruction of the city of Hanover was recognized by the foreign press as a miracle of Hanover . The term was developed for the title of the June 3, 1959 issue of Der Spiegel magazine .
history
When the city center of Hanover was 90% destroyed by the air raids on Hanover during the Second World War , and the city totaled 48%, it was the seventh among the destroyed German cities . But the reconstruction in Hanover was much faster than in many other German cities.
Based on a land use plan drawn up in 1950 , achievements that were regarded as exemplary were achieved with the participation of citizens , such as the Hanover Construction Community , and under the influence of the Hanover Fair
- with both the structural of the now to a reorganization of core city expanded center of the city, through a newly created city ring was framed,
- as well as, and above all, the implementation of an associated, completely new and future-oriented traffic concept for the entire city, keyword car- friendly city .
With Rudolf Hillebrecht on the title page, Der Spiegel presented in 1959 under the title The Miracle of Hanover in particular the " traffic on the leash " in great detail .
There was also criticism of the reconstruction:
" The car-friendly expansion of the central inner city areas, implemented at almost any price, which on the basis of the land use plan of 1951 were tightly encircled with noisy, multi-lane streets, still does not contribute to the wellbeing of the residents. Another reason for the criticism is numerous Demolition measures of historical buildings in Hanover that were tolerated or even initiated by Hillebrecht. This is an extremely serious and explosive accusation, considering how few components of the architectural heritage were left to maintain the city's historical identity after the war. "
