The draw for the qualification took place on July 3, 2012 in Vienna.
There are 18 teams taking part that have previously qualified for the competition.
The four participants in the wildcard tournament were determined on June 21 on the sidelines of the EHF Congress.

Qualified teams

Each of the three teams in a pot are divided into a group of one to three. From pot one, a team plays against a team in the fourth group. Two teams from one pot never come into one group. On June 21st it was decided that the Slovenian club RK Koper was not allowed to take part in this tournament.
On August 2, 2012, the EHF announced that the insolvent AG Copenhagen will not take part in the 2012/13 Champions League season. The vacant place in Group C was awarded to Danish runner-up Bjerringbro-Silkeborg, whose place in the wildcard tournament was awarded to RK Koper.
