X-FAB Silicon Foundries (dt. X-FAB Semiconductor works ) is a listed operator of semiconductors - foundries . The formal headquarters of the group holding company X-FAB Silicon Foundries SE is Tessenderlo in Belgium , while the operational headquarters X-FAB Semiconductor Foundries GmbH is located in the southeast industrial area of Erfurt between Melchendorf and Windischholzhausen . The main field of activity is the manufacture of customer-specific integrated analog and mixed-signal circuits v. a. for the automotive industry, for the aerospace industry and other industrial applications. In particular, the focus is on the production of high-voltage circuits up to 700 V. X-FAB produces circuits with structure sizes from 1.0 µm to 130 nm on 6- and 8-inch wafers (2020). In addition to the production of ICs , the production of MEMS has been increasing in volume in recent years. The foundry in Lubbock now offers the possibility of processing 6-inch wafers made of silicon carbide (SiC).
history
The company emerged from parts of the former GDR semiconductor combine VEB Mikroelektronik Karl Marx ( Kombinat Mikroelektronik Erfurt ), which had its headquarters and some production facilities in Erfurt since 1989. The combine formed in 1978 was an amalgamation of semiconductor manufacturers from the GDR at various locations, including the Center for Microelectronics Dresden (ZMD).
As a result of German reunification , the combine was broken up and the individual businesses were partially privatized. The facilities in Erfurt were partially privatized in 1992, among other things, into the X-FAB Gesellschaft zur Manufacturing von Wafern mbH (manufacturing) - as part of the Melexis NV company - and the Thesys Gesellschaft für Mikroelektronik mbH (design). Both were sold together in 1999 to the Belgian company ELEX NV (the previous owner was part of the Free State of Thuringia).
The production of ZMD in Dresden was taken over in 2007. The semiconductor factory in Plymouth , UK , was sold to Plus Semi (since 2010 Plessey Semiconductors ) in December 2009 . In 2016, X-Fab took over the insolvent company Altis Semiconductor in France.
X-Fab has 6 production facilities, which are located in Germany (Erfurt, Dresden and Itzehoe ), France ( Corbeil-Essonnes ), Malaysia ( Kuching ) and in the USA ( Lubbock ). The plant in Itzehoe is a spin-off of the Fraunhofer Institute for Silicon Technology . The group employs around 3800 people worldwide and achieved sales of 299.3 million euros in 2007. In 2009 it was only 210.5 million dollars (151.1 million euros), then in 2010 it was 317 million dollars (222.4 million euros). The CEO was Hans-Jürgen Straub for 22 years until 2014, who was replaced by the Belgian Rudi de Winter.
