Xaver Terofal

Xaver Terofal (born January 20, 1862 in Dorfen , Upper Bavaria , † April 4, 1940 in Schliersee ) was a German actor and theater director .

Life

Terofal came from a family with French roots and was born the son of a successful wine owner. His great-grandfather, the French diplomat Carl Laforet, who married in Munich around 1800, changed his family name to Ananym Terofal. The opinion that has often been expressed that Xaver Terofal's maiden name is “François Xavier Laforet” is therefore incorrect.

From an early age, Terofal was interested in music, dance and above all theater. At his father's request, he first had to complete an apprenticeship as a butcher in Isen . He also worked in this profession for some time and was soon able - with the support of his father - to lease several inns in Dorfen , Halfing and Munich . Terofal staged music and theater evenings there.

In Munich Terofal was then able to debut as Schuhplattler in the State Theater on Gärtnerplatz . There he made friends with the court actor Konrad Dreher . Terofal had all-round success, so that in 1891 he was able to acquire the Hotel Seehaus in Schliersee . Together with his friend and colleague Dreher, he founded the Schlierseer Bauerntheater a short time later . With this ensemble he toured with great success through Germany, Austria and Switzerland. He also directed and in 1905 took over sole management of the stage. In 1894 he toured America and played with his peasant theater in the Metropolitan Opera .

Terofal was married to Anna Terofal, b. Motzet from Isen . Xaver Terofal died on April 4, 1940 at the age of 78 in Schliersee and was buried there as well.

His grandson Hans Terofal was also an actor.

Honors

In 1964, a street in the Blumenau in Munich was named after Terofal.
