Xavier Munyongani

Xavier Johnsai Munyongani (born January 1, 1950 in Mutero Mission , Zimbabwe ; † October 15, 2017 in Harare , Zimbabwe) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Gweru .

Life

Xavier Munyongani, the eighth of ten children from the marriage of Joachim and Anna Mudhodhi, attended the minor seminary in Gweru from 1967 to 1970 and studied theology and philosophy at the seminary in Chishawasha from 1971 to 1977 . On August 20, 1977, he received the sacrament of ordination in the Gweru stadium . He graduated from the University of Zimbabwe with a degree in Religious Studies in 1978 and completed a Bible study at the Pontifical Athenaeum Sant'Anselmo in Rome in 1986 . He then taught at the Chishawasha Seminary, became its vice-rector in 1998 and directed the formation of young priests for fourteen years. When the Diocese of Gweru was split up with the re-establishment of the Diocese of Masvingo , Xavier Munyongani was heavily involved in directing the dioceses. In 2007 he was appointed chaplain of the Zimbabwean Catholic Congregation in England and Wales by the Bishops' Conference in Zimbabwe. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him monsignor .

On June 15, 2013, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of Gweru. The Bishop of Masvingo , Michael Dixon Bhasera , donated him episcopal ordination on September 14th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Harare , Robert Christopher Ndlovu , and the Bishop Emeritus of Gweru, Martin Munyanyi .

Munyongani spoke the dialect of Shona and that of the Ndebele people , as well as English, Italian and German.
