Xiaowei Zhuang

Xiaowei Zhuang ( Chinese  莊小威  /  庄小威 , Pinyin Zhuāng Xiǎowēi ) (* 1972 ) is an American biophysicist of Chinese origin. She is known for developing high resolution microscopy for biological applications, specifically she is one of those who developed Photoactivated Localization Microscopy (also known as Stochastic Optical Reconstruction Microscopy , STORM) (2006).

Zhuang graduated from Gifted Young College (少年 班) of the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) at Suzhou High School in 1987 . She received a BS in Physics from USTC and a Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley . From 1997 to 2001 she was a Chodorow Postdoctoral Fellow at Stanford University .

Zhuang is a researcher at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and a professor of chemistry and biochemistry and physics at Harvard University . She heads a research team developing high-resolution microscopy techniques to monitor the mechanism of virus entry into cells.

The technology she has developed allows the diffraction limit to be overcome in light microscopes and resolution in the nanometer range. In 2008 she achieved three-dimensional super resolution with STORM and in 2012 she achieved resolution at the molecular level. With her technology, she discovered novel cell structures such as the periodic membrane skeleton structure in neurons, gained new insights into the molecular organization of the synapses in the brain and discovered new chromatin structures that are important in gene regulation. She later developed a new technique for the molecular mapping of entire genome sections, Multiplexed Error-Robust Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (MERFISH). She also developed new imaging techniques for the distribution of special cells in complex tissues.
