The Xue Long 2 ( Chinese  雪龍2 , Pinyin Xue Lóng 2 ) is an icebreaker - research vessel of the Polar Research Institute of China . It is the successor to the Xue Long , China's first icebreaker.

history

The € 5 million design contract for China's first domestically built polar research vessel was signed with Finnish engineering firm Aker Arctic in 2012 , but construction by the Chinese Jiangnan Shipyard did not begin until December 2016. The ship entered service on July 11, 2019 posed. The Xue Long 2 will serve as a supply ship for China's research facilities in the Arctic and Antarctic . The ship, which can break ice up to 1.5 meters thick, is also involved in the MOSAiC expedition .
