The family of the wooden club relatives (Xylariaceae) is a very variable group within the department of the sac fungi . A common feature is the development of the asci in perithecia , which are often united in very large numbers to form a mostly charcoal stroma . When ripe, the ascospores emerge through narrow openings in the perithecia . They are used for sexual reproduction and are dark brown to black in color. In addition, there are often asexual, translucent conidia . The fruit bodies of the antler-shaped wooden club, which are colored white at the tips by conidiospores, are known and striking .
