YInMn blue is an inorganic chemical compound and a blue pigment . Its name is composed of the contained elements yttrium , indium and manganese .

Extraction and presentation

US researchers at Oregon State University came up with the first presentation of the pigment by accident in 2009. The team around the chemist Mas Subramanian actually wanted to test the magnetic and electrical properties of black manganese (III) oxide . To do this, they added other chemicals and heated them in the furnace to around 1100 ° C (2000 ° F). The result with some compositions was an intensely glowing blue powder. YIn 0.9 Mn 0.10 O 3 (bluish color with the lowest manganese content) or YIn 0.8 Mn 0.20 O 3 (best blue spectrum) was determined as the optimum pigment composition .

properties

YInMn blue

YInMn blue is a blue solid. The pigment does not fade in water or oil, is non-toxic and comparatively easy to manufacture. The compound has a hexagonal crystal structure with the space group P 6 3 cm (space group no. 185) and 6 formula units per unit cell . Template: room group / 185

use

YInMn blue can be used as a pigment e.g. B. used for art restoration. It was licensed from the Shepherd Color Company.
