The Yandex Browser ( spelling Yandex.Browser , Russian Яндекс.Браузер ) is a web browser developed by the Russian search engine operator Yandex , which was first published in October 2012. It is based on the HTML rendering engine Blink .

Yandex.Browser is available in versions for Windows , macOS , Android and iOS . A Linux version has been available as a beta version since October 2014.

history

From summer 2012, the Mozilla Foundation started delivering its Firefox browser in Russia with Google as a preset search page. The move was surprising because Yandex had been cooperating with Mozilla since 2009 and was preset as the Firefox standard search page. Many Yandex employees worked on the Mozilla Foundation project to adapt the Firefox browser for Russian-speaking users. Even if you can set Yandex as the default search page again since Firefox version 14, the Russian company saw the market share of its services threatened, which according to the market research company Comscore served 50.4 million visitors and 185 million searches a day in October 2012.

Yandex was under pressure anyway. When it expanded into Turkey in autumn 2011, Yandex could do little against the market leader Google. Since Google was now aggressively promoting its Google Chrome browser in Russia, Yandex also developed a browser.

The Yandex Browser was on October 1, 2012 for Microsoft Windows and OS X presented. On June 18, 2013, versions for the smartphone and tablet operating systems Apple iOS and Android followed . The beta version was released in May 2015.

A beta version for Linux followed at the end of 2014. The Linux version has remained in this project status ever since.

In February 2016, Yandex acquired the security software "Outpost" for the Yandex browser from the Russian developer Agnitum .

software

The Yandex.Browser is based on WebKit or on the spin-off Blink developed by Google as part of the Chromium project . In addition, the " Opera Turbo " technology, which should enable fast surfing even with slow Internet connections on mobile devices, was licensed by Opera Software . Kaspersky Anti-Virus automatically scans downloads for viruses and malware. If desired, websites can be translated automatically with the help of Yandex Translate .

Visually, the browser is characterized by its "tablo" start page. There is a classic and the new interface. The new minimalist surface should set the browser apart from its competition. Only a few symbols can be seen, the background image and the position of the tab bar are adjustable. The new interface also offers a selection of different animated backgrounds. Otherwise, the browser supports mouse gestures , as known from Opera . In addition, Opera and Google Chrome extensions (sometimes also Chrome apps) can be installed.

reception

When it was first published, the browser was largely positively received by the trade press in the mobile and PC versions. It was criticized that it has so far been strongly geared towards the Russian-speaking market. The first version was further developed and increasingly received recommendations from the German specialist press. In addition to the appearance that is perceived as fresh , the data protection functions are emphasized, especially in stealth mode .

According to Liveinternet.ru, visitors from different countries used the Yandex.Browser to the following extent:
