Yarcombe is a village and civil parish in the county of Devon in England. It is located in the East Devon district on the A30 road not far from the towns of Honiton and Chard in the rolling meadows and ancient forests of the Yarty Valley on the southern edge of the Blackdown Hills , an Area of ​​Outstanding Natural Beauty . At the 2011 census , Yarcombe had 500 residents.

Geography and history

In the small village center there is a church from Norman times, which is consecrated to John the Baptist, an old inn whose origins go back to a monastery, a hotel, a bed and breakfast and a collection of residential buildings, plus a few farms and hamlets outside. making Yarcombe a large community.

Yarcombe's economy is driven by agriculture and farming services. Tourism, construction, auto repair shops, furniture manufacturing and handicrafts also contribute to the local economy. Regular events include races for domestic pigs and terriers, and for several years the East Devon Sheepdog Trials for sheepdogs took place in July.

One of his descendants is still a squire at Yarcombe Manor. During the Hundred Years War , the French owner of the village used his income from Yarcombe to finance the French armies in the fight against the English.

The village of Yarcombe is near the border between Devon and Somerset not far from western Dorset . The closest small towns are Chard (10 km) and Honiton (15 km). The coastal towns of Lyme Regis , Seaton , Sidmouth , Budleigh Salterton and Exmouth are nearby . The larger cities in the wider area include Taunton (20 km north), Exeter and Yeovil (40 km west and east, respectively).

Yarcombe was named Village of the Year in an annual Devon competition in 2005.
