Yasothon ( Thai : ยโสธร ) is a city ( เทศบาล เมือง ยโสธร ) in the Thai province of Yasothon . It is the capital of the district ( Amphoe ) Mueang Yasothon and the province of Yasothon in Isan , northeast of Thailand .

The city of Yasothon has 20,450 inhabitants. (Last updated 2012)

geography

Yasothon lies in the middle of a barren plain in the Isan. The distance to the capital Bangkok is a good 500 kilometers.

Economy and Importance

Yasothon is one of the poorest areas of Thailand. The people here earn only about a third of the average income. This leads to a steady rural exodus, or rather, to an escape to Bangkok.

Modest rice cultivation and textile production are the drivers of economic development.

In March 2000 an attempt was made to establish a self-governing economy. Attempts were made to set up their own communal currency, the bia, which was used instead of the baht (1 bia = 1 baht). The residents were able to take out interest-free loans of up to 500 Bia and thus trade with one another. The Bia was not valid outside the communal border. The Bank of Thailand stopped this approach after just a month.

history

In the Yasothon area, many ruins testify to a long Khmer presence from Angkor . However, no written evidence has yet been found. In 1811 a prince from Champasak founded the place Ban Singh Kao ( บ้าน สิงห์ เก่า , "Old Lion Village"), which he had built on an abandoned temple with access to the banks of the Mae Nam Chi (Chi River) . During the reign of King Rama II (ruled 1809 to 1824) the name was changed to Yasothon and a Chao Mueang, a kind of provincial governor, was appointed.

General Bodindecha (1777-1849) was by King Rama III. (r. 1824-1851) charged with the suppression of an uprising of King Anuvong of Vientiane and put a break after the end of the fighting in Yasothon. A statue and a larger chedi bear witness to this .

During the fighting against the Ho from southern China (1865 to 1890), Yasothon provided a force that Nong Khai had to defend on the Mekong .

Today's Yasothon Province was formed in 1972 when it was separated from Ubon Ratchathani .
