Liu Yifei ( Chinese  劉亦菲  /  刘亦菲 , Pinyin Liú Yìfēi , real name Liu Ximeizi ( Chinese  劉 茜 美 子 , Pinyin Liú Xīměizǐ ); born August 25, 1987 in Wuhan , Hubei ), also known as Crystal Liu , is a Chinese actress and singer .

biography

After her parents divorced at an early age, Ximeizi , as she was then called by her first name, lived with her mother. On her ninth birthday, her mother gave her a crystal , which she liked so much that she called herself Crystal from then on . At the same time, this sparked her passion for collecting Swarovski crystals , which is still one of her passionate hobbies.

Acting

When she was eleven, her mother moved to New York with her and they lived in the United States for four years . In June 2002, Crystal returned to China to start an acting career in her homeland. At that time, she chose the first name Yifei as a stage name . In September 2002, she applied for admission to the Beijing Film Academy and was one of the 500 selected out of over 100,000 applicants. At 14½ she was the youngest student to ever study at this drama academy.

Soon after admission to the Beijing Acting Academy, which she successfully graduated in July 2006, she appeared in various films and television series. Her international breakthrough as a film actress came in the role of sparrow alongside Jackie Chan in the US-Chinese co-production The Forbidden Kingdom , which premiered in 2008.

In 2011 she played the role of Siu-sin in Wilson Yip's remake of A Chinese Ghost Story , a romantically inclined demon who rebels against her mistress, an old man-eating tree spirit, out of love for a man.

On November 29, 2017, Liu Yifei was cast in the title role of Hua Mulan in Disney's upcoming adventure film Mulan , a remake of the 1998 cartoon. After Liu expressed her support for the Hong Kong police in the context of the protests in 2019 on social networks , Hong Kong protesters and their supporters called for the boycott of the film Mulan under the hashtag #BoycottMulan .

In August 2005, she received a production contract from Sony Music Japan , after which she temporarily moved to Japan . On July 19, 2006, Sony Music released their first single , Mayonaka no Doa . Her first music album was released on September 5, 2006 in China under the title Liu Yifei , her first album in Japan ( All My Words ) the following day.
