Yōsuke Watanuki ( Japanese 綿 貫 陽 介 Watanuki Yōsuke ; born April 12, 1998 in Kasukabe , Saitama Prefecture ) is a Japanese tennis player .

Career

As a junior Watanuki achieved his best placement with a 2nd place in the junior world rankings . In 2016 he made it to the semi-finals in the junior competition of the US Open .

On the professional tour he mostly plays tournaments on the second and third class Challenger and Future Tour. So far he has won four single and one double titles on the Future Tour. He made his debut on the ATP World Tour with a wildcard in doubles in Tokyo . Together with Akira Santillan he played against the Czech pairing Tomáš Berdych and Radek Štěpánek . These turned out to be too strong opponents, so he lost the duel 2: 6, 2: 6. In the world rankings, he was able to move into the top 500 for the first time in 2017.

He won his first title in November 2019 in Kobe . In the final he defeated his compatriot Yūichi Sugita in two sets.

In 2018 he made his debut for the Japanese Davis Cup team .

Private

Watanuki has two older brothers who are also tennis professionals. His eldest brother Yūsuke already played in the mixed competition at Wimbledon . All of them played in Toyota for the first time in the same tournament.
