Yucca brevifolia subsp. jaegeriana (English common name : Pygmae Yucca) is a subspecies of the Joshua palm lily ( Yucca brevifolia ) in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).
description
The miniature yucca Yucca brevifolia subsp. jaegeriana grows solitary and forms a trunk 3 to 6 meters high. It branches out at a height of 1 to 2 meters. It is smaller in all aspects than the subspecies Yucca brevifolia subsp. brevifolia . The flowering period is from April to May. Specimens from the high mountain regions are frost hardy to minus 15 ° C. However, they are very sensitive to moisture and should therefore be protected all year round.
distribution
Yucca brevifolia subsp. jaegeriana is distributed in the USA in the states of California , Arizona and Utah in the Mojave Desert and the Great Basin Desert in plains, on flat slopes and in open woodland (Pinyon-Juniper) at an altitude of 1000 to 2000 m. It grows together with Yucca baccata , Echinocactus polycephalus , Echinomastus johnsonii , Echinocereus engelmannii and numerous other types of cacti .
Systematics
The name was chosen in honor of Edmund C. Jaeger. The description is by Fritz Hochstätter under the name Yucca brevifolia subsp. jaegeriana was published in 2001.
Synonyms are Yucca jaegeriana Lenz 2007 Yucca brevifolia var. Jaegeriana (McKelvey) McKelvey 1935, Yucca brevifolia var. Wolfei (Jones) McKelvey 1935.
