Yucca glauca subsp. stricta (English common name : "Small Soapweed Yucca") is a subspecies of the blue-green palm lily( Yucca glauca ) in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

description

Yucca glauca subsp. stricta grows solitary, without stem, but sometimes with stems up to 60 cm in height. It forms large groups with over ten rosettes 2 to 3 meters in diameter. The thin, soft, flexible, green to gray-green leaves are up to 75 cm long and 1 to 2 cm wide. There are fine fibers on the leaf margins. The branched inflorescence that begins in the leaves becomes 1.8 to 2.5 meters high. The bell-shaped, pendulous, white, cream-colored flowers are 4 to 6 cm long and wide. The subspecies Yucca glauca subsp. stricta is larger in all dimensions than Yucca glauca subsp. glauca . It has longer leaves but smaller seed pods.

The flowering period is from May to July. Yucca glauca subsp. stricta is in Central Europe to minus 20 ° C hardy . It is one of the toughest species in the genus. 20 year old specimens are in the collection of F. Hochstätter.

distribution

Yucca glauca subsp. stricta grows in grasslands in the US states of Oklahoma , Kansas , New Mexico and Colorado at altitudes of 900 to 1500 m and is there associated with Escobaria vivipara , Escobaria missouriensis , Echinocereusreichenbachii and other cactus species .
