The blue-green palm lily ( Yucca glauca ) (English common name : Great Plains Yucca) is a species of palm lily ( Yucca ) in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

description

The blue-green palm lily grows solitary, trunkless (but sometimes with trunks up to 60 cm in height) to group-forming, with ten to twelve rosettes, 2 to 3 meters wide. The thin, soft, flexible, green, gray, sometimes white with fine fibers at the edges, leaves are 20 to 70 cm long and 1 to 2 cm wide.

The racemose inflorescence that begins in the leaves becomes 1 to 2 meters high. The bell-shaped, spherical, white, cream-colored flowers have a length and a diameter of 4 to 6 cm.

The flowering period extends from April to June.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 60.

Occurrence

The blue-green palm lily is found in the USA in the prairies of the west in the states of Montana , Nebraska , South Dakota , North Dakota , Colorado , Wyoming , Oklahoma . Kansas and New Mexico distributed in plains at altitudes between 800 and 2600 meters. This species often grows in association with various types of cacti .

The blue-green palm lily is frost hardy to minus 18 ° C in Central Europe . It is one of the toughest species in the genus.

Systematics

The first description by Thomas Nuttall under the name Yucca glauca was published in 1813.
