The Zénobe Gramme (A 958) is a gaff- rigged ketch built in 1961 and sailing under the Belgian flag with its home port of Zeebrugge . She is also the sailing training ship of the Royal Belgian Navy and has the registration number A 958 . It is named after the Belgian scientist Zénobe Théophile Gramme (1826–1901).
Construction and technical data
The ship was laid down on October 7, 1960 at the former J. Boel & Fils shipyard in Temse for the Belgian Navy. The launch took place on October 23, 1961, the delivery to the Navy on December 27, 1961. The ship is 28.14 meters long, 6.85 meters wide, 2.80 meters deep and displaces 136 tons. Under sail it reaches a speed of 9 knots, under a motor - a six-cylinder diesel with 230 hp - 8 knots. The crew consists of an officer and five men and eleven cadets.
history
After its commissioning in 1961, the Belgian Navy initially used the Zénobe Gramme as an oceanographic research vessel. In particular, work in the field of hydroacoustics and flow measurements was carried out and other maritime phenomena were investigated.
Since 1970 she has been the sailing training ship of the Belgian Navy. On it the junior seafaring officers are trained and educated. In addition to two officers and five men, the crew for this task also includes eleven cadets. At the same time, the Belgian Navy uses the ship for representative tasks.
The ship regularly takes part in events for tall ships, such as the Cutty Sark Tall Ship Race. In 1976 the Zenobe Gramme took first place in this race.
