Zābol ( Persian زابل) is a city in the province of Sistan and Balochistan in eastern Iran . It lies on the border with Afghanistan and Pakistan . Hamun Lake is located near the city . The area is irrigated by the Hirmand River.
The residents of Zābol speak a Persian language variant very close to Farsi-Dari , which is known as Sistani . The people of Zabol speak the same dialect as the Afghan province of Farah, i. H. the Persian-Shiite inhabitants of Farah. See also: West Afghanistan.
A number of tribes live here, including the Jahantighi, Shahraiki, Arbabi, Barani, Srani, Fakhireh and Mir. Some Baluch , Pashtuns and Brahuis also live in the city .
Zābol is known for its 120-day wind ( Bād-e sad-o bīst Rūz ), a persistent summer sandstorm that blows from north to south . According to WHO , Zabol is the city with the highest levels of particulate matter in the world.
Zābol University is the largest university in the city. The city has a regional airport.
Rostam , the hero of the Shāhnām of Firdausi, is considered the hero of Zābol among the townspeople.
