Zalman M. Schachter-Shalomi , known as " Reb Zalman " (born August 28, 1924 in Schowkwa , then Poland , now Ukraine ; died July 3, 2014 in Boulder , Colorado ), is considered one of the most important representatives of the Jewish Renewal movement .

Life

Schachter-Shalomi grew up in Vienna , was interned in concentration camps during the Vichy regime and fled to the United States in 1941 , where he worked as a rabbi . He received a Masters in Psychology of Religion from Boston University and a PhD from Hebrew Union College .

He then worked as a professor of Jewish studies and religious studies at Temple University (Philadelphia) and at the University of Manitoba in Canada. He became one of the best-known idols of the 1968 Jewish movement .
