Zapping (TV show)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zapping was the name of a television program that was shown daily (mostly unencrypted) on the pay-TV channel Premiere from August 1993 to September 2006 . From June 4, 2011 to May 31, 2015 , Zapping was back on Sky (on Sky Cinema).

concept

In this three-minute program, TV clips from various channels from the previous day were shown, mainly TV breakdowns. These were not commented on, only shown cut together one after the other. In order to achieve the zapping effect, the previously typical zapping noise was cut between the clips.

popularity

Since the program ran unencrypted on the analogue Premiere channel, the program could be seen by all cable and satellite households in Germany and thus created an audience far beyond the circle of Premiere subscribers. The show was also popular with many television presenters. If a breakdown happened in a live broadcast, it often happened that the presenter would then greet the zapping viewers in anticipation of showing up there the next day.

influence

The willingness of the major TV programs to incorporate short snippets of competing programs into their programs has risen sharply as a result of the program. A number of similar formats also started over the years: A year after Zapping, Premiere itself started the show Kalkofes Mattscheibe (which had previously been on the radio), in which clips were shown, but these were heavily commented on and satirized by Oliver Kalkofe . In the ARD show privatfernsehen clips were commented weekly by the cabaret artist Alfons . In 1999, ProSieben started the TV total program , in which this function is carried out by Stefan Raab .

Time slot

The main slot for the program was Monday to Sunday on Premiere analog at 7:55 pm. From June 6, 2011 , Zapping ran regularly on Sky Cinema (HD) every day at 8:10 p.m. One day later you could watch the previous day's episodes for free on the Sky website .

Audience interaction

The Zapping editorial team offered viewers the opportunity to submit suggestions for programs via the social network Facebook . Should a submitted proposal make it into the "Zapping of the Week", the submitter had the opportunity to be named and also received a zapping cup and a Sky teaspoon.

Special editions

In addition to the normal episodes on weekdays, “Zapping of the Week” (the best clips of the week) was shown on Saturdays. This was also the case with the resumption of the format. In addition, older issues were broadcast every Sunday under the name “Zapping Classics”. Before that, the “Zapping Special” (the best clips on a specific topic) ran on Sundays and public holidays. There were also theme weeks where only (older) clips on one theme were broadcast or the half-hour zapping "annual review" every year. On April 1, 2000, the 2000th episode of "Zapping" aired. The corresponding special program "Zapping 2000" was moderated by Oliver Kalkofe and showed a humorous look behind the scenes of the program.

The temporary end

On October 1, 2006 , the production of new episodes of Zapping was stopped for the first time. The zapping editorial team still existed and, among other things, provided the Kalkofes Mattscheibe program with the latest footage. To 31 May 2015 the production was stopped again. The setting was justified by the editorial staff with the change in television, which leaves less and less room for blunders with "fewer live broadcasts, more scripted reality and perfected productions".
