Fossil finds

Since 2004, the investigations of 109 million old dinosaur footprints from a village near Zarand, discovered in 1972, have been resumed. It is believed that these are the footprints of a female dinosaur and her cubs.

The north of Kerman is of particular interest to paleontologists , as there are many fossil sites from different geological periods. So far, fossils of graptolites from the Ordovician were found there, as well as fossils of dinosaurs from the Jurassic and Cretaceous , and from mammals from the Tertiary . In terms of fossil discoveries, Iran is one of the leading countries in the world with fossil discovery regions such as Maragheh , Varzaghan and Kerman.

Zarand as namesake

  • A crater on Mars ( List of Mars Craters ) was named after the city of Zarand.
  • A plain southwest of Tehran is also called Zarand.
