Zdeněk Bouček

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Zdeněk Rudolf Jan Bouček (born January 8, 1924 in Hradec Králové , Czechoslovakia ; died July 17, 2011 in Prague ) was a Czech entomologist and parasitologist who primarily dealt with the systematics of the ore wasps . He has more than 1,100 taxa described , including 46 families , subfamilies and tribes and 281 genera and subgenera.

Life

Zdeněk Bouček grew up with two younger siblings on a farm near Hradec Králové . After the end of the Second World War , he began to study natural sciences at Charles University in Prague , which he completed in 1949 with a doctorate in RNDr. completed. After two years of military service, he began working in the plant protection department of an agricultural research facility in Prague. In 1960 he became an employee of the entomological department of the National Museum , which was initially housed in the main building in the city center and was later moved to the Kunratice district on the southern outskirts of Prague. In 1969 the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences awarded him the title of Doctor of Life Sciences (DrSc.) For his dissertation, published in 1952, a revision of the European ore wasps. In the same year, a few months after the crackdown on the Prague Spring , Bouček decided not to return to the ČSSR from an approved trip to Turin. His daughter was at that time on a semester abroad in London and his wife was able to follow him on a pretext and with the help of a certificate from the National Museum.

From January 1970, Bouček was temporarily employed part-time in the Hope Department of Entomology at Oxford University Museum of Natural History . In June 1970, he was given a full-time position at the Commonwealth Institute of Entomology, which later became the Center for Agriculture and Bioscience International (CABI) and was housed in the Natural History Museum in London. He worked there until he retired in 1989. After the Velvet Revolution at the end of the same year, Bouček and his wife moved to a country house in Velký Vřešťov , very close to his birthplace, Hradec Králové , but returned annually to Great Britain for visits.

Boučeks scientific interest was the jewel wasps (Chalcidiodea), paying particular families with larger species such as the Leucospidae , Chalcididae , Pteromalidae , Torymidae and Eulophidae . He is considered the founder of the modern classification of jewel wasps and has more than 1,100 taxa described , including 46 families , subfamilies and tribes and 281 genera and subgenera.

Bouček's life's work is the systematic processing of the Austro-Asian ore wasps, published in 1988, of which it is claimed that an editor was busy for two months with the inclusion of their taxonomic changes in the Zoological Record . His more than 150 scientific publications include numerous revisions of higher taxa that are considered standard works in his field.

In 2004 Bouček was elected Honorary Fellow of the Royal Entomological Society of London . The following year the International Society of Hymenopterists awarded him their medal for his research.
