Zeinab Elobeid Yousif ( Arabic زينب العبيد يوسف; * June 13, 1952 in Khartoum ; † March 19, 2016 in London ) was a Sudanese aeronautical engineer . She was the first Sudanese woman to be licensed by the Civil Aviation Authority (United Kingdom) . She worked for Sudan Airways from July 1973 to May 1992 , after which she moved to the UK . In the 1960s, Sudanese culture was seen as patriarchal and hostile to women who wanted to study and work in areas such as engineering.

Yousif studied and worked in the fields of electronics , avionics communication , navigation and radar . She worked on various aircraft such as the Boeing 707 , Boeing 737 , 347 , Fokker 50 and Fokker F27 for Sudan Airways and on the Cessna 402 , 404 , 208 and Beechcraft 1900 at London Southend Airport .

Life

Origin and education

Yousif was born on June 13, 1952 in Khartoum, Sudan. She was the eldest daughter of Elobeid Yousif Ahmed Shidwan, a well-known and respected city businessman, and Asma Elobeid Ahmed Shidwan. Both of her parents came from religious backgrounds. Yousif grew up in the village of Umdawwanban ( Arabic أم ضوّاً بان), known for Alma-seed, a large religious school for boys that people from all over Sudan and sub-Saharan Africa send their children to to study and learn the Quran . Yousif had graduated from high school thanks to her father's encouragement. It was typical for Sudanese girls their age to get married and give up their education. Yousif studied electrical engineering at the Polytechnic in Khartoum from 1970 to 1973.

Professional career

She worked as an aerospace engineer in the radio workshop for maintenance and repair. From 1983 to 1986 she studied Avionics and Aerospace Engineering at Brunel Technical College in Bristol , UK, where she received her license from the Civil Aviation Authority. In the 1990s she earned a Master of Science degree in Advanced Manufacturing Systems from Kingston University in London.
