history

zeitraumexit was created in 2001 from a merger of the Zeit Büro für Kunst and EX! T starting point theater . “Since then, the quartet has stood for unusual, international art projects in the region that bring together the visual and performing arts.” Founding members were the artists Gabriele Oßwald (performance, visual arts), Wolfgang Sautermeister (performance, visual arts), Elke Schmid (director) and Tilo Schwarz (drawing, stage design, lighting design), as well as the board members Manfred Ziegler, Peter Empl and Gerhard Schöneberger. In addition to their work for zeitraumexit, the artistic directors Oßwald, Sautermeister, Schmid and Schwarz also make a name for themselves as individual artists and are invited to Seoul with their work. Elke Schmid left zeitraumexit 2009 to pursue her work in Berlin.

Between May 2001 and May 2007 the zeitraumexit premises were in the Mannheim district of Neckarstadt-Ost. In 2007, we moved into the historic Kauffmannmühle , a listed former grain mill in the Jungbusch district . Two studios, two theater rooms (with 60 and 80 seats respectively), an exhibition room, a bar and offices were set up in the new premises. The courtyard is used as an open-air stage. The association is financed for the most part from private funds, through foundations and sponsors, but also receives project funding from the Federal Cultural Foundation , the state of Baden-Württemberg and the city of Mannheim. In addition, one is “dependent on constant and free help from 30 to 60 helpers”. Zeitraumexit is reported in the regional press (e.g. Mannheimer Morgen , Rheinpfalz ), on radio ( SWR , DLF ) and television ( 3sat ), in national newspapers and specialist magazines ( Süddeutsche Zeitung , Theater der Zeit , tanz aktuell , Kunstforum international ) and in the online press ( night review ).

Prizes and awards

In 2008, the artistic director of zeitraumexit received the Baerwind Prize from the Rudi Baerwind Foundation , as the collective "almost exactly corresponds to Baerwind's idea of energy in a symposium that transcends boundaries". zeitraumexit is a “meeting point for artists and those interested in art” outside of established institutions. The annual festival Wunder der Prärie , organized by zeitraumexit, has a firm place in the event calendar of the region and enjoys attention "that goes far beyond this".

At the Stuttgart Theater Prize 2013, zeitraumexit's co-productions won several prizes: The Stuttgart dance and theater prize in the dance category went to Gerro, Minos & Him , the special prize for an exceptional performance and the audience prize went to Sudermann & Söderberg for “A Talk”. In 2015 zeitraumexit was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Culture Prize. The reason stated: "zeitraumexit eV has developed into an important institution for the independent performing arts that is recognized throughout Germany and Europe since it was founded". The combination of promoting young talent and research-oriented theater work is also particularly praised. "This has made zeitraumexit a place with a remarkable character and striking charisma for artists in the region and beyond", concludes the Board of Trustees of the Culture Prize Foundation.

Wonders of the prairie

The largest multi-day festival organized by zeitraumexit is the Miracle of the Prairie , one of the 15 top festivals in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region with around 5000 visitors, which "has earned a great reputation among artists and art lovers within a short period of time". The main sponsor of the festival has been BASF SE since 2005 . The starting point of the festival was the 9th International Performance Conference in July 2000, at which zeitraumexit acted as host. Since then, the festival has taken place every year in galleries and theater rooms, but it also opens up into the city and enlivens urban places: Gob Squad has already played at the Holiday Inn with Room Service - Help me make it through the night and the Paradeplatz with Saving the world - a very very wide screen film (a co-production by zeitraumexit, Hebbel am Ufer Berlin, Kampnagel Hamburg, and Wiener Festwochen ), a parking garage became the exhibition space, and Friederike & Uwe , together with visitors, recreated the water tower with ministeck in the main station (“My home is my water tower ").

The “most spectacular festival action” so far was the “cape fear” project by raumlabor berlin : over the ten-day festival, the interdisciplinary group for architecture and urban planning “worked with locals on a public square on a submarine made of recycled materials, the last one Day [...] the Mannheimer Neckarspitze was circumnavigated in order to dock at Ludwigshafener Rheinufer ”. In 2013 raumlabor berlin returned to Mannheim. Over ten days, Wunder der Prärie brings dance, theater, performance and visual arts from national and international actors "from Auckland to Zurich" to Mannheim, with a guest list that is "truly impressive": Anna Huber , Stefan Kaegi ( Rimini Protokoll ) , Hong O Bong, Alastair Mc Lennan, Stans Café, Bill Aitchison, Jaap Blonk , Tatsumi Oromoto, Ene-Liis Semper, Boris Nikitin, David Weber-Krebs, Hina Strüver, Jan-Philipp Possmann, Birgit Aßhoff, Ingrid Mwangi, Robert Hutter , Walter Siegfried, Marina POP , Norbert Klassen , Phil Hayes , Marc Calame, Matthias Rüttimann, Nezaket Ekici , Genco Gulan , Herma Auguste Wittstock , Prof. Hans-Thies Lehmann , Claire Marshall ( Forced Entertainment ), Mike Pearson , She She Pop , Urban Lies, das Helmi, Dance on & off, Antonia Baehr, Boris Nieslony , Simon Mayer, Georg Winter and Jacob Wren.
