The Zeller See lies entirely in the municipal area of the town of Zell am See im Pinzgau in the Salzburg region , Austria, which gives the lake its name . It was formed at the end of the last ice age around 10,000 to 16,000 years ago through an erosion caused by the ice masses of the northern Glockner group . The current area of the lake is a remnant of the original water area, which extended to Saalfelden in the north and also filled part of the Salzach valley in the south .
The lake drains south into the Salzach through two kilometers of canals - the large and the small lake canal . About two kilometers north of the lake shore, an inconspicuous valley watershed separates the lake from the Saalach , which, flowing north, only flows into the Salzach after about 80 kilometers below Salzburg . The water temperature in summer is between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius.
It was historically significant as a wintry extraction site for ice as a refrigerant for ice cellars, including German breweries that were supplied by rail wagons.
