The Central Stadium ( Russian Центральный стадион Tsentralnyi Stadion ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Russian city ​​of Astrakhan , southern Russia . The football club Volgar-Gazprom Astrakhan , currently in the second-class 1st division , welcomes its opponents to the games here. The uncovered round stadium on the Volga currently offers 17,712 seats in its stands.

View into the central stadium

The central stadium was inaugurated in 1955 and at that time had 15,000 seats on wooden stands. First construction work was carried out in 1964. The premises were brought up to date. In the early 1970s, the venue received an electronic scoreboard. In 1974 the stadium was renovated and expanded.

Little was invested in the stadium structure until well into the 1990s. In 1999 the sports facility was equipped with plastic seats. In 2001 a record number of spectators was set with 33,000 visitors. Between 2002 and 2006, further work, such as the construction of a new floodlight system , was carried out. In 2013 the central stadium was extensively renovated. There were u. a. new seats, a new athletics facility, a new natural turf playing field with turf heating , drainage and irrigation systems installed.

On May 21, 2015, the final of the 2014/15 Russian Football Cup took place in the Astrakhan Stadium. The capital club Lokomotiv Moscow defeated FK Kuban Krasnodar 3-1 after extra time .
