The Center for Culture and Visual Communication of the Deaf Berlin / Brandenburg is a non-profit association. It coordinates the state interpreting centers in Potsdam, Cottbus and Berlin for German Sign Language (DGS) or accompanying signs, finger alphabet , tactile signs , Lormen , written interpreting and supporting communication. The association also runs a socio-cultural center on the subject of “ hearing impaired and deaf people ”. The ZfK wants to promote communication and equitable exchange between hearing and hearing impaired people using sign language, as well as raising awareness among society for this sensory disability.

history

The ZfK originally emerged from the “Berliner Taubstummen-Theaterverein Frohsinn” founded in 1881. After the end of the First World War, the club was re-established in 1918 and acted as the “Berlin Deaf and Dumb Stage Club”. After the end of the Second World War, it became the pantomime ensemble of the deaf ("Berliner Laienspielgruppe") and later the pantomime ensemble of the GDR, which performed countless times at home and abroad and disbanded in 1989 with German reunification.

In 1991 Christina and Uwe Schönfeld founded the “Berlin Deaf Stage Club” again, which was renamed in 1993 to “Center for Culture and Visual Communication of the Deaf Berlin / Brandenburg eV”. In addition to the deaf theater work, the active participation and involvement of the deaf in social events as well as the use of modern media and socio-cultural projects have now become the main endeavors of the association. On October 2nd, 1998 the Governing Mayor of Berlin Eberhard Diepgen awarded the “Center for Culture and Visual Communication of the Deaf Berlin / Brandenburg eV” the Order of Merit of the State of Berlin for outstanding services to the city of Berlin .

The ZfK has had its headquarters in Potsdam since 2005 and operates branch offices in Cottbus and Berlin. The cornerstones for today's structure are:

The ZfK board of directors is made up of Uwe Schönfeld (1st chairman), Steffen Helbing (2nd chairman) and Alexandra Giuranna (treasurer). The association has several special-purpose operations and a permanent workforce who works in the above-mentioned areas.

The Brandenburg educational institute for the hearing impaired, which is integrated into the ZfK, trains sign language teachers and communication assistants for the hearing impaired and conducts one-to-one lessons. It offers individual integration and communication courses for the hearing impaired or the hearing, for children and adults.
  • Social counseling and communication assistance for deaf people and their families in the public sector
  • Production of films in sign language, video guides and educational videos in our own studio. With the commitment of professional hearing interpreters and translators as well as deaf interpreters, cameramen and AVID editors, TV / DVD and web film productions and accessible media according to BITV 2.0 are among other things for translations of German texts into German Sign Language (DGS) or " easy language ". The ZfK media center has five fully equipped editing stations and broadcasts its own weekly magazine in the form of a WEB TV.
  • Support for projects and natural persons who are committed to promoting sign language, the culture of the deaf and the political and social interests of the hearing impaired.
  • The ZfK operates family and individual aid in Brandenburg and Berlin with its own fleet of vehicles.

Sociopolitical work

The ZfK cooperates with the State Association of the Deaf Brandenburg , the Deaf Association Berlin, the Association for the Promotion of the Deaf of the New Federal States FORSEA and the federal initiative at home instead of home in order to represent the socio-political interests of this community externally.

State interpreting center Brandenburg / Berlin

The State Interpreting Center works on behalf of and with funding from the Brandenburg Ministry of Labor, Social Affairs, Health, Women and Family (MASGF). She mediates, coordinates, plans, organizes and raises awareness in all areas in the state of Brandenburg when it comes to visual communication and interpreting services. In addition, she arranges, coordinates and plans interpreting assignments in Berlin and other federal states.

Integration specialist service Cottbus

The integration specialist service is based in Cottbus and works in accordance with the requirements of the integration office of the state of Brandenburg. The specialist service is only there for hearing-impaired people with an employment relationship and looks after, accompanies and supports hearing-impaired employees and their employers if necessary.

Supraregional coordination and advice center

The supraregional coordination and advice center for the hearing impaired in Brandenburg (ÜKBH) is also active on behalf of the MASGF Brandenburg. In particular, it acts as an interface to authorities and administrations with the aim of further improving the situation for hearing-impaired people in society. Seminars, discussions and documentation are offered for this purpose.
