Zhang Deyi

Zhang Deyi ( Chinese  張德彜 , Pinyin Zhāng Déyí ); (* 1847 , † 1918 ) was a Chinese diplomat .

Life

His ancestors were from Fujian in the Manchuria migrated and were recruited for the troops under the Chinese banner when the Manchus conquered China. Born into a poor family, he was among the first ten students of the Tongwen Guan (Beijing Imperial Academy of Western Languages ​​and Sciences) in 1862 . He showed a talent for the English language .

In 1866 he and fellow students Fen Yi and Yan Hui accompanied the Mandarin Bin Chun with his eldest son Guang Ying on a fact-finding mission to Europe .

  • On the way back he wrote a report on the sailing ship about the Tongwen Guan and this voyage.
