meaning

The approximately 81 hectare area was placed under nature protection in 1980 under the key number PB-028 .

The protected area is characterized in the upper, eastern part by stony arable land (Schlüter'scher Plan) and formerly wide hedge areas, which, as connected ruderal areas, differ significantly in their vegetation from the Bockfeld or the Rhön outside. The cause was the gravel during the war to extend the Mönkeloher military airport. At that time under British fire and bombing, there are numerous bomb craters in the entire Ziegenberg and probably still remains of ammunition. Most of the upper area is overgrown with exceptionally species-rich mixed deciduous forest, which is largely due to the commitment of the owner Reinhard Freiherr von und zu Brenken (1892-1957) from Wewer.

By a council resolution of the city of Paderborn, the Ziegenberg area was cut through the route of the A 33 despite the ongoing protection of the area , which led to a large loss of area right from the start. The ruderal flora on the edge of the Schlueter plan was lost, including u. a. also the only occurrence there of the Oriental Zackenschötchen , a very tall, yellow-flowering crucifer. The conspicuous field edge flora east of the motorway was also permanently destroyed; a comparable flora has not developed again.

Due to the termination of the earlier sheep farm, the open areas of the Ziegenberg, as far as they are not cultivated as arable land, gradually became encumbered with the following forest cover.

The rather broad Lohne with its tributaries Alte Alme (Pütt) and Alme is surrounded on both sides by meadows and fields. In the eastern part of the Barkhauser bridge is the rest of the Werdelwiese and from the south the Bornmeßge as a former orchard. In the western part of the north lies the Mühlenbreite and in the south you can find the former flood meadows that have been turned into fields, the "Great Meadows".

Despite the abundance of flora and fauna that still exist, the greatest danger today is uninhibited recreational use in disregard of the protective regulations: leaving the paths by walkers and mountain bike riders with the creation of trails, picnicking, horse riding, black fishing and leaving rubbish behind, but especially the increasing number of large dogs for which the meadows and streams are used as open-air areas.
