The Ziegenberg is 496.6 m above sea level. NHN high, extreme eastern foothills of the Barigauer Höhe ( 664.6 m ) in the Thuringian Slate Mountains northwest of Sitzendorf in the district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt .
The mountain was created by the crevice-controlled valley erosion, through which peaks were cut out in large areas of homogeneous rock (e.g. in Ordovician phycode schists and quartzites of the Schwarza-Sormitz area ).
Its southwest flank is bounded by the Hädderbach , its southeast flank by the Schwarza and its northeast flank by the Blambach . To the west to northwest, however, the landscape rises significantly soon after the summit.
