history

Young white tiger in Beauval

The ZooParc de Beauval was founded in 1980 as a bird park. In 1989 the first big cats and monkeys were added. The zoo has had white tigers since 1991 and white lions since 1999 . Major expansions in the 1990s were the construction of the first tropical houses, a vivarium and an aquarium, as well as large facilities for sea lions , manatees and an African savannah landscape (three hectares).

In Beauval since 2012: giant pandas

Koalas are also shown in the Australia House . The extension area of the zoo, which was laid out in 2000, includes five hectares of open space for African elephants . A "South American plain" houses u. a. Tapirs, capybaras and pampas hares .

In the 2010s, an "Asian lowland" (for rhinos, tapirs, muntjacs and axis deer, among others ) was established. A three-hectare landscape "On the Heights of China" was also added. Two giant pandas have been shown there since 2012 . A baby elephant was born on July 22, 2012.

A half-hour flight show of various birds (birds of prey, owls, marabous, pelicans and other species) is offered on a new amphitheater-style facility opened in 2015 (several times a day during the season). Around 450 birds are involved in each. In March 2016, a new facility for hippos was opened. It is the largest of its kind in Europe. In 2017 a new large lion enclosure followed. A new zoo clinic was also opened in 2017 , the largest in France.

On the evening of August 4, 2017, the female panda Huan Huan gave birth to two young animals, one of which, however, was too weak and died the next day. The surviving animal was christened Yuan Meng in December 2017 and has been visible to visitors in the Panda House since January 13, 2018, and in the outdoor area since March 2018.

On March 30, 2019, a cable car was opened to shorten the route between different parts of the zoo and to provide new panoramic views.

In February 2020 a new tropical hall ( dôme equatorial ) with around 25,000 animals (including 24,000 fish) from around 200 species will be opened. It has a diameter of 100 meters and a height of 38 meters.
