Zoot Horn Rollo
Bill Harkleroad (born January 8, 1949 in Long Beach , California ), better known as Zoot Horn Rollo , is an American guitarist. He has appeared primarily as the guitarist of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band and as a co-founder of Mallard .
Career
Bill Harkleroad grew up in Hawthorne and played the accordion first . At 13 he switched to drums and then guitar . At 15 he became a guitarist with BC & The Cavemen . Here already played Mark Boston ( Rockette Morton ) bass. At this time he met John French and Jeff Cotton and moved in the Antelope Valley in the vicinity of Don Van Vliet and Frank Zappa . He participated in numerous sessions , but did not become a permanent member of Captain Beefheart's Magic Band until June 1968 , after Alex St. Clair (Alex Snouffer) was eliminated. He was instrumental in the legendary Trout Mask Replica album , as well as on four other Captain Beefheart albums until 1974.
After long arguments with Beefheart, he got out of his Magic Band like Mark Boston, John French and Art Tripp and formed the band Mallard with them . Highly respected by critics and musicians, there was no commercial success here either and Mallard finally broke up in 1977 after two albums and an extensive European tour. Worth mentioning is the excellent appearance on the German TV program Rockpalast from 1976.
Disappointed in the music business , Bill Harkleroad retired to Eugene , Oregon , where he runs a music store and still works as a guitar teacher today.
In 1998 he published his biography Lunar Notes: Zoot Horn Rollo's Captain Beefheart Experience , in which he settles accounts with Beefheart and the music business.
In 2001 he released his widely acclaimed solo album We Saw A Bozo Under The Sea . In 2003 he was invited by his former bandmates John French and Mark Boston to the reunion of the Magic Band, which he declined.
In 2008 he played guitar on John French's solo album City Of Refuge , and he also recorded with Henry Kaiser and Ant-Bee (Billy James).
