Zozo is a 2005 film drama directed by Josef Fares , who also wrote the screenplay. It was first broadcast in Sweden on September 2, 2005. The main role of Zozo is played by Imad Creidi , who made his film debut here. Filming locations were in Beirut and Trollhättan , Sweden.

Plot and background

12-year-old Zozo lives with his family in Beirut at the time of the Lebanon War . His parents decide to immigrate to Sweden to live with Zozo's grandparents. When they are about to leave, their house is hit by a bomb and destroyed. Zozo is the only survivor and now goes to Scandinavia all alone. Here a completely unknown world awaits him.

Josef Fares processes his own biography in the film. Like Zozo, he was born in Lebanon and raised in Sweden. With the realistic portrayal of rejection, hostility and disorientation in a foreign country, the director sets a small memorial to all children who have lost their roots through war.

criticism

  • “In his third feature film, the director Josef Fares, previously known for his quirky comedies, processes elements of his own biography. And he succeeds in doing this with a unique mixture of melancholy tragedy and bizarre humor. Few films have so honestly and convincingly portrayed the fate of children who are robbed of their roots by adult wars. "
