The train left Granville at 8:45 a.m., had 14 cars and was a few minutes late when it arrived at Montparnasse station at 3:55 p.m. The train driver Guillaume-Marie Pellerin, who had 19 years of professional experience, drove into the station at around 45 km / h to make up for the delay. However, the Westinghouse brake failed and the locomotive brake did not work enough to reduce the speed of the heavy train sufficiently. Pellerin jumped from the locomotive with the stoker and saved himself before the locomotive ran over the buffer stop and the cross platform and broke through the approximately 1.25 meter thick parapet below a large glass window, onto which the Place de Rennes , which was one floor below, fell and only just missed a tram .
