Zuzu Angel is a Brazilian drama by Sérgio Rezende from 2006, which is set at the time of the Brazilian military dictatorship . The film is set in Rio de Janeiro and is based on the life story of the fashion designer Zuzu Angel , who tried to find her missing son Stuart Angel Jones in the 1970s , who as a member of the guerrilla movement MR-8 was arrested by the Brazilian military regime and finally tortured to death had been.

The film was released in Brazilian cinemas on August 4, 2006.

production

The film is based on the 1986 book "Eu, Zuzu Angel, procuro meu filho" ( " I, Zuzu Angel, looking for my son " ) by Virgínia Valli, Zuzu Angel's sister. After “O Homem da Capa Preta” , “ Lamarca” , “ Guerra de Canudos” and Mauá - O Imperador eo Rei”, the film is the fifth adaptation of the story of a real person by Sérgio Rezende.

action

In 1971 Zuzu Angel is at the height of her career. However, she is concerned that she has not heard from her son Stuart, who is a member of the resistance movement, in six months.

An anonymous caller tells her that "Paulo" has fallen. When she realizes that Paulo is her son's code name, she tries to find out where her son is through the military and her lawyer Fraga. The military denies having Stuart in custody, and Air Force Captain Mota tries to get Zuzu to incriminate Stuart.

Shortly afterwards, Zuzu receives a letter from a friend of her son informing her that Stuart was tortured in captivity and died as a result of the torture. Zuzu's attempt to make the fate of her son known to the public fails due to the country's press censorship . In a court case, Stuart is found innocent for lack of evidence, despite those present being aware of Stuart's death.

Subsequently, Zuzu tried harder to publish Stuart's story, using her influence as a well-known personality and writing to celebrities. The military then issued a warning.

Years later, her lawyer arranged a meeting with a former military regime lieutenant who wanted to give Zuzu information about her son. Zuzu manages to present Henry Kissinger with an envelope with documents about Stuart's history during his visit to Rio de Janeiro.

Zuzu is invited to an excursion by her friend Lúcia, which Zuzu cancels because of a meeting with the lieutenant. When Lúcia dies in a car accident shortly afterwards, Zuzu realizes that the accident should turn into an attack on her. In the event of her death, she leaves a letter stating that she was killed by the same people as her son. She leaves the letter with her friend Chico Buarque .

After receiving the lieutenant's confession, Zuzu arranges a meeting with a representative from Amnesty International , who is to publish the information she has gathered in the form of a dossier . Then she goes into hiding in her hometown, where she reads the lieutenant's confession. She learns that he worked for the Air Force, was involved in both the arrest and torture of her son, and that her son's body had been disposed of in the sea.

A few days later, Zuzu returns to Rio de Janeiro. That same night the lieutenant tried to go into hiding, but was caught by Captain Mota when he left his apartment. A little later, Zuzu is out with the dossier in her car. She is chased, rammed, and pushed off the road, killing her. Captain Mota approaches the wrecked car, takes the envelope with evidence and leaves the scene of the accident. Finally, the police appear at the scene of the accident, while Mota and a colleague watch what is happening from a distance.

Differences between film and reality

The letter that Zuzu Angel sent in the film Chico Buarque actually existed , but she sent letters not only to Buarque, but to several people, including the writer Zuenir Ventura and Brazilian President Ernesto Geisel . In the film, she dies three days after writing the letter; in fact, there was about a year between the writing of the letters and her death.

Angel's death was not caused because the lieutenant's evidence posed a threat to the military. The lieutenant and the dossier are cinematic fiction . In reality, she did not receive any information from military circles. So the car accident in which she died was not arbitrarily brought about, but happened after she had celebrated her new collection at a friend's house and was on the way home.

In the foreword of the published film script, Marcos Bernstein admits to having been concerned because too much focus was placed on the fictional dossier. Sérgio Rezende, however, emphasized that it is more important to make a good film than a documentary . According to Bernstein, however, they found out afterwards from a source that Zuzu Angel was actually about to submit an important dossier shortly before her death.

Angel's sister Virgínia Valli, author of the book on which the film is based, does not appear in the film, although she helped Angel find her son. That can be seen in the appreciation at the end of the credits of Angel's daughters:

"Hildegard e Ana Cristina prestam homenagem à sua tia Virgínia Valli, que lutou ao lado de Zuzu Angel para localizar Stuart, e, na pessoa de Virgínia, a todos os familiares de desaparecidos políticos da época da repressão no Brasil."

"Hildegard and Ana Cristina pay tribute to their aunt Virgínia Valli, who fought alongside Zuzu Angel to find Stuart, and in the person of Virgínia, they pay tribute to all family members of political desaparecidos of the era of repression in Brazil."
