Zvi Gabai

Zvi Gabai (born December 25, 1938 in Baghdad , Kingdom of Iraq , † July 27, 2018 ) was an Israeli diplomat , author and translator .

Gabai emigrated to Israel in 1951. He studied at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem , where he received a Bachelor of Arts in political science . At the University of Pennsylvania in the USA, he earned a Master of Arts in Middle Eastern Studies and Islamic Studies .

After completing his studies, Gabai worked in the Israeli Foreign Ministry. His first posts took him back to the United States , where he was consul at the Israeli consulates general in Philadelphia and San Francisco . After the establishment of diplomatic relations between Egypt and Israel, he became the first political counselor at the Israeli embassy in Cairo . He later became director of the Egypt department at the Israeli Foreign Ministry. During his further diplomatic career, Gabai held the post of Israeli Consul General in Sydney and was the first Israeli ambassador to reside in Ireland after the Israeli embassy opened in Dublin in 1994 . He then was Deputy Director General in the Israeli Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem, responsible for Asia and the Pacific.

Gabai published several articles on the Middle East and other subjects. He also translated modern Arabic poetry . After leaving the diplomatic service, he was mainly active as a lecturer. In June 2009 he became a board member of the Jerusalem College of Engineering.
