The Zweyer von Evenbach (also: Zwyer von Evibach) were a family from Uri in central Switzerland , who were raised to the baron status in 1688 and can be traced back to the 14th century until 1836.

history

The family comes from the hamlet of Öfibach in the municipality of Silenen in the Swiss canton of Uri. There are numerous forms of writing the name (Efibach, Evibach, Evenbach). Family members are certainly mentioned in a document at the beginning of the 14th century. In the 16th century the family belonged to the rural upper class of Altdorf in the canton of Uri.

Andreas Zwyer von Evibach (1552–1622) was Vogt of the Constance Monastery in Kaiserstuhl on the Upper Rhine and in Klingnau . His son, Sebastian Peregrin Zwyer , was an imperial field marshal lieutenant and is considered one of the most influential statesmen in the Confederation in the 17th century. His son Franz Ernst (1621–1697) took over Hilfikon Castle and the rule of Hilfikon , which his father and uncle had acquired in 1644. With Sebastian Peregrin's grandson, Franz Sebastian, the Swiss branch of the Zwyer family died out in the male line in 1724.

Sebastian Peregrin's brother, Johann Franz, held high offices in the Prince Diocese of Constance and was elevated to the status of baron by Emperor Leopold I in 1688 . His descendants continued to serve the Prince Diocese of Constance. Members of this branch of the family also belonged to the Augsburg Cathedral Chapter and were active in the Teutonic Order as commander . Through the enfeoffment with the village of Unteralpfen , the von Zweyer became members of the Breisgau knighthood and were represented in the Breisgau estates . The German line of Zweyer died out in 1836 with the royal Bavarian Lieutenant General Franz Sigmund von Zweyer in the male line.
