The A701 leaves Dumfries and travels North to meet the M74 at Beattock it thens joins the M74 Motorway for a short spell before branching of to the North East towards Moffat and ultimately Edinburgh. The road is an alternative to the A7 or A702 routes from the Edinburgh to the M74 and M6 south. It is a true driver's road popular with motor cyclists.
