The asteroid was discovered on December 10, 1993 by the American astronomers C. S. Shoemaker and EM Shoemaker at the Palomar Observatory ( IAU code 675) and is named after Peleus , the king of Thessaly who was married to the sea ​​nymph Thetis and father of Achilles .
